Can't boot Raspian OS or an image of it?

I installed pimox successfully on my pi 4 and previously, I had a running raspian install on my pi 4, and made an image of the sd card... but no matter what i try I cannot get it past the boot screen.. always comes up with boot options. I've tried everything in this issues thread, but it seems it won't get past the boot screen. I did manage to get one option to come up, but then it hung on no console screen. I've made sure I disabled safe boot, and pre-shared keys both. I've tried multiple different configuration options. Booting from a cd image, from a usb image, from a imported disk drive, nothing works. I can get ubuntu or debian to boot up no problem, but not raspian or any flavor of it.. Can pimox run raspberry pi images in a vm? seems like this should be totally possible since it's the same hardware. Set cpu to host, and tried other suggestions in this thread... been at this for hours... help please!
