This PR combines the (hopefully) best bits of #143 and #188 into a single PR.

Note I haven't tested the BME688 changes - I thought I had a BME680 knocking about somewhere, but can't currently find it

I'll run this on my enviro and BME688 tomorrow and check that all looks good.

@MichaelBell @Gadgetoid I've run this code on my Enviro with a BME688 connected. Configured for None and with I2C address and all works as expected.
