Great appendix - I think this will help a lot of people just starting out. I love the xkcd reference, perfect!

For the VM section, have you considered pointing to some of the most common VM software like VMware or VirtualBox?

Thank you! Just added VirtualBox for their software virtualization support and GPLv3 license + cleaned up some of the explanations for the difference between remote servers and web tools
