Cant use "Special Fields > Value of formula" result within price calculation

Hi can i use the result from a "Special Fields > Value of formula" ive set to

protected $use_expression = true;

shows up, bit isnt being used within the calculation, how can i do this, saves having 1 enormous calculation.....
