What happened?

Server is running Debian bookworm on EC2 t4g.small instance.

I am running my own from-scratch PHP application with no frameworks involved. I tried frankenphp on my staging environment for a week and it was stable. After deploying to production with the same config, this crash happened after about 2 days of uptime. The only difference between staging and production is that there is higher user load on production, although it's still pretty low. There are typically 1-5 users using the application at any given time with an average RPS <1. I am not using any of PHP's opcache_ functions. There was no other log output besides the SEGV. I have not been able to reproduce it yet by using the php scripts that were accessed before the crash.

Do you have memory monitoring on? Can you see if memory increases over time?

Do you use a Caddyfile? Is your application mainly making calls to a database or are you doing other stuff like cropping images?

This might be tied to the static binary running on your specific debian instance, so hard to say from this information alone what could have gone wrong.

It might also be worth to try and see if you have the same issues when running in a docker image, setup similar to how it's described here, just with EC2 in your case

I did not have memory monitoring on when it happened. I am working on setting up prometheus/grafana for the staging server but still have not managed to reproduce the crash there yet.

Caddyfile is attached. It contains some ansible template variables such as {{ domain }} which get swapped out by ansible when copied to the server.

The application does make lots of database calls using pdo_mysql. PHP session data is stored in mysql, so almost every request is minimally doing a read and save of session data. Most other pages in the application also perform several more queries to populate data tables and/or dropdown menus. Many of the pages are making additional ajax calls that do mysql queries as the user performs various tasks. The application also uses TCPDF to generate a variety of pdf reports which can be anywhere from 1 to hundreds of pages. I also use PHPExcel and PHPWord to do exports to excel/word format. Other libraries used are phpmailer and aws-sdk-php which is used for S3 access.

I will see if I can reproduce it on staging with some more info on memory usage.

Any chance you're using the XML extensions for anything (or the DOM extension)? I ran into a segfault from libxml2 on ZTS builds recently that had to be fixed in upstream php (not 100% clear if this segfault was php at fault or caddy at fault): https://github.com/php/php-src/pull/20150
