Docker bind mount prevents FrankenPHP watch mode from detecting file changes.

What happened?

I've created a basic Docker-based setup of FrankenPHP similar to the Symfony Docker project but without the Symfony framework. I've used the code examples under "Custom Apps" in the Worker mode section of the documentation to create a simple worker index.php that uses a Kernel class to handle requests. For now it simply captures the output of phpinfo() and returns it for outputting to the browser.

For the development environment I'd like to use the watch mode in the worker section of the Caddy configuration to have the workers restart upon file changes. At the same time I've used a bind mount on these directories to allow me to work on these files from the host environment (Win 11 24H2, IDE: PHPStorm).

The watch mode for the Caddyfile works properly. It restarts Caddy when I make changes to the Caddyfile on the host environment. However, when I make changes to the Kernel.php it does not cause the workers to reset and the browser output remains unchanged.

The Dockerfile contains directives that copy the PHP files like this:

In the compose.override.yaml i have the volumes configured like this:

When I comment out the public and src directories here to disable the bind mounts, rebuild the container, and then manually edit the Kernel.php file (which resides in the src/App directory) from within the container, everything works fine. The debug output in my Docker Desktop Logs window shows the workers being restarted and the browser output reflects the changes I've made upon refresh.

As soon as I re-enable the bind mounts and rebuild everything, none of the changes made to the Kernel.php file from the host environment trigger a worker restart. I've checked that the files are actually changed inside the container which is the case.

I'd expect the changes made to the files from the host environment to also trigger a worker restart.

Things I've tried:

• Using a different program (Notepad++) to edit the files from the host environment: doesn't detect file change.
• Using the Alpine version of the FrankenPHP Docker image as a base instead: same result.
• Editing the files manually inside the container while the bind mount is active: still doesn't detect file change.
• Explicitly target the Kernel.php file in the watch directive: still doesn't detect file change.
• Editing the index.php file instead of Kernel.php while the bind mount is active: still doesn't detect file change.
• Running curl -X POST http://localhost:2019/frankenphp/workers/restart from within the container. This causes the workers to be restarted as expected and the browser output to reflect the file changes upon refresh. It still doesn't trigger a restart upon editing the files though.
• Adding :ro to the volume entries to make the bind mounts read-only: no change to aforementioned behavior.

It seems to be related to a known WSL 2 issue: https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/issues/4739

Tools such as emcrisostomo/fswatch, inotify-tools/inotify-tools, e-dant/watcher and so on, cannot correctly track the events of a filesystem that is mounted to a container using "bind mount".

FrankenPHP file watcher is based on e-dant/watcher.

You may have noticed that automatic worker restart works in the dunglas/symfony-docker project, but in this case it works because Symfony, when receiving an HTTP request (in development mode), sees that some files have changed and automatically rebuilds the cache (files with the .php extension) inside the container, after which FrankenPHP reacts to these events and restarts the workers.

You can move your project files to the WSL file system to ensure the FrankenPHP watcher works correctly.

You can also just checkout your project in WSL and simply open it in Windows (PHPStorm has native support for this and will use the PHP binary in WSL even though PHPStorm is installed in Windows).

I have a similar issue with my Symfony project, every time I modify files I have to restart my container. The source files are already on WSL2 filesystem as it's faster

hai guys @giosal @MaxTheDragon . i found temporary solution by set --max-requests=1 for windows -> docker dekstop

i was try set --watch --poll but still not work

max-requests=1 actualy is not recomand for prod server if prod using linux then set default max-requests=500 or higher for better performance

now im using windows for development only
