To be able to send notification emails and keep people engaged with the project, we want to email people who signed up when we have a new monthly round-up blog post.

You may be better raising some donations and funding this via a paid for service. That way you dont have to worry about GDPR, bounces and all the other drama.

Obviously doing it self hosted is possible but for the low double digit costs its probably not worth the effort.

If you the self hosted route I would recommend routing via AWS simple email service. The cost is all but negligible and is in my experience much more reliable that the other mail services at the price point.

Thanks for the advice @anoma. A donation page is definitely something I plan to add and I'm considering as many options as I can to make this project sustainable.

In terms of the mailing list, it's something that I've intended to send out along with the last couple of round-up blog posts. Over 750 people have signed up already so I want to follow through and utilise this resource.
