Can we take it for granted that the return value of `send_update_after/4` will remain the timer reference?

Given there are no typespecs accompanying the LiveView function headers (why??) and since there's not a word on it in the documentation, I must ask whether it is safe to assume (by looking at the source code) that the return value of the send_update_after/4 will remain the timer reference.
