New logo

Current logo could use some improvements. https://github.com/philn/glide/blob/master/data/net.baseart.Glide.svg

@aperezdc suggested a paper airplane (= glider) flying out from a clapperboard.

Any help appreciated!

How about a paper plane made with a movie poster?

Quick sketch:

Interesting! I'm a bit concerned about copyright infringement but the idea is very good I think. Maybe some public-domain movie material could be used? Thanks Felipe for taking the time to sketch a proposal!

philn avatar Jun 27 '18 08:06 philn

Yes, something in the public domain would be the best choice.

Following up on the idea of a paper plane:

glide_icon_shape_1

I quite like this shape, although I couldn't really make it work with a movie poster. Depending on the angle, it looks like a "play" button.

(I guess it also looks a bit like a messaging app icon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

This is a quick sketch of what I was thinking about at first (the upper one). That may be a bit complicated to get right with a low colour count, which could be important if the design would be used as a logo as well, or for making a symbolic version of the icon. Therefore I came up with the second option, which overlays the paper plane over the striped areas of the clapperboard, making this upper part look a bit like a runway on which the glider is landing (or taking off from):

At the moment I am short on time for side projects, my apologies for not making a nicer mockup with InkScape. I just wanted to share the ideas, in case they may help.

aperezdc avatar Jul 05 '18 15:07 aperezdc

Looks nice though! Maybe the view angle on the second design could be changed a bit so that the glider isn't seen from a 90 degrees perspective? Not sure I explain myself properly :)

Hi I am a graphic designer and I would like to help this issue. With all due respect can I?

gcarlosr avatar Jul 18 '18 20:07 gcarlosr

Yes of course @gcarlosr ! Would you like to work on a proposal along the ones proposed already or draft something different? Up to you, really. Help is warmly welcomed!

philn avatar Jul 18 '18 20:07 philn

thanks for the opportunity in the next few days I will be attaching some entries with my proposal. Thanks in advance.

gcarlosr avatar Jul 19 '18 14:07 gcarlosr

Hi here something that I have been developing during the day, you may like some, let me know your concerns regarding the shape and colors used. glide

gcarlosr avatar Jul 19 '18 20:07 gcarlosr

Thanks! I'm not sure it's worth mentioning the project name. Also I think the format should be more like a square maybe, and should be usable for desktop menus like the GNOME-Shell app grid for instance or GNOME Software and stuff like Flathub, so that probably also rules out white background as well.

philn avatar Jul 20 '18 11:07 philn

Of course, each of those requirements will be adjusted to your choosing the right shape and color, I would like to know which of the 2 icons I like the most. When you choose, I would give you a package with the formats and settings for each of your utilities.

gcarlosr avatar Jul 20 '18 13:07 gcarlosr

Good afternoon I have prepared the package with the icons adjusted to what I asked last time, I would just like to know which of the two design taste more, the first (top) or the second (bottom)

gcarlosr avatar Aug 02 '18 19:08 gcarlosr

I think I prefer the second. But in general I'm still undecided about which design to choose among all the proposals.

I gave a go at the paper plane metaphor.

I think a much more clear and legible way forward is to embrace the most common metaphor for a media player, the play button. Just needs a unique flavor.

Thank you so much for working on these! Yeah i'm afraid the paper plane concept isn't gonna fly :( The first flavor of play button concept looks quite nice imho! This one, https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/14821/282155337-140f90df-50ca-4bdb-9201-4cfe9f9b7e55.png

How about this color treatment?

jimmac avatar Nov 27 '23 16:11 jimmac

Thanks! I showed it to a couple folks and they thought the colors looked a bit pale, so suggested saturating a bit more. Would that be possible? This is what @sdroege came up with:

philn avatar Nov 27 '23 17:11 philn

I think with a bit more saturation that would look nicer, but the shape and colors are nice.

Something like (+60% saturation) 285937927-b2e7846c-3079-46f9-85fe-73bfb5b367da

sdroege avatar Nov 27 '23 17:11 sdroege

We're bound to operate within the GNOME icon color palette, but I perhaps an increased contrast between the gradient extremes is enough?

image

jimmac avatar Nov 27 '23 18:11 jimmac

I didn't change the colors but only the saturation, however your version with increased contrast also works for me. It loses the yellow gradient for some reason though

sdroege avatar Nov 27 '23 18:11 sdroege

And the blue one?

philn avatar Nov 27 '23 18:11 philn

"I didn't change the colors but only the saturation" is like saying I didn't break the speed limit, I just increased my velocity :)

Looks great! Thanks! Would you like to send a PR? Otherwise you can attach the assets here and I'll be happy to commit them on your behalf. Whatever is easier for you :)
