Vimium breaks the default controls on youtube since a long time ago
- f for full screen doesn't work
- 1578 to skip to specific parts of the video doesn't work etc.
thought i finally say someting
If you prefer to use Youtube's shortcuts, then add an exclusion rule.
Click on the Vimium icon (top right), and add a rule:
- Pattern: something like
https?://www.youtube.com/watch*
- Keys: something like
f1578
Click Save changes
.
Or, if you want to mix and match Vimium and Youtube shortcuts, then use this approach.
what does the first comment do?
does it exclude vimimum from workign on yt, and restoring yt's default keys?
or excluding and then addding new vimimum keys afterwards?
--
i dont understand the 2nd comment, what is it doing? is it adding a new vimumn key to skip to the exact % of the video
or is it 'passing' a vimumium key and thus restoring yt's default keys?
--
is it difficult to jsut fix this problem?
it was expected that all default keys on a site would work -- and that the vimimum keys are 'extras' -- that was the whole point of installing it
this is the main reason why i quickly did not use vimimum until only recently
i think this problem occurred the entire last year and over
--
does github not have any in-site notifications?? are the notifications only sent to the acc's email?
worked on yt for liltte bit maybe cos something changed on yt
since then the default shortcuts on yt has been broken
if you just go on insert mode, youtube shortcuts work well ! (
@maoow genius, but the only problem is that when you go to insert mode, there is a small div in bottom right that says "Insert". So if I go to insert mode and press "f" to make youtube player fullscreen, I have this annoying insert div on bottom right.
But if I press escape, then youtube players exits out of fullscreen.
However I think this issue #2963 talks about that edge case as well.
There's an advanced option named Hide the Heads Up Display (HUD) in insert mode
on Vimium Options page.

wow! Could not believe the solution is so simple. Thank you so much!

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to consider implementing some overlays currently drawn in the DOM (such as the insert mode overlay) into the browser extension icon, which can typically be pinned to a browser toolbar (e.g., uBlock which indicates blocked element count in a notification badge on the extension icon).
Seems simple enough, requires no DOM injection, and this would avoid issues with overlays in edge cases where overlays interfere.

I'm using vimium C but I believe this would work here as well
if you're annoyed by the "insert mode" div in full screen you can press Ctrl + [
to exit "insert mode" and the video will stay in full screen

Hi, this used to work but when I now do Ctrl+[ to exit "insert mode". it also remove full screen as well as insert mode.
I recently discovered that, if I enter into insert mode by pressing I then I am able to use YouTube video controls perfectly without any issue. After, I am finished I exit full screen mode and also pressing ESC puts me back into the viewing mode.
For sound increasing and decreasing on youtube insert mode, without using arrow key? is there any option to do that? like u for up, shift u for down or anything that is my fingertips.
Just wanted to add my two cents to this. I found from an older issue that you can map <c-]>
to passNextKey
, so every time you want to go to fullscreen, for example, you press <c-]>
then f
.
However, I found ;
to be a more straightforward mapping for this:
# For using website's own keymaps
map ; passNextKey
