VSCode extension eats up CPU on projects that are not set up for Betterer

Describe the bug

It appears that this keeps spinning if the project is not configured to use Betterer:

This in turn seems to make Code - Insiders Helper (GPU) go crazy with CPU usage, dragging WindowServer with it along:

If I hide the extension from the status bar:

GPU/CPU usage instantly calms down. I can no longer see Code - Insiders Helper (GPU) with any relevant usage.

To Reproduce

Open a project where betterer isn't installed, or otherwise get the status bar icon to spin.

Expected behavior

No CPU usage.
