Finder refuses to open mounted MTP device directory

I have mounted the MTP device in ~/mtp but when I attempt to open it in finder, I get the rainbow loading wheel, until I force quit. Using ls in terminal just shows a .

Using macOS High Sierra 10.13.2

As a workaround, I found that running it in the foreground (i.e. using the -f command line option) seems to work. I have no idea what's going wrong though.
