the problem with the nickname is, that it is not unique and it might have spaces in it.
I understand your point, but without using plugins, the username will always exposed with the Autor URL. I think it is better to add an extra field to not upset...
Isn't it easier to use a custom-post-type for direct messages? It would make it easiere to list them, to update them and to comment them?
