I'm guessing if you want to keep the variable-length functionality, "this looks like a job for macros".

At which point, it would probably be time to replace the signal/signal1/signal2 etc concept with something that generates the required valence at compile time..

I'm not overly keen on changing the API though. I think I have a runtime solution with minimal overhead, but will test for a while before pushing.
