Is drupal-with-nginx recommended for busy production servers?

You are likely to get better feedback from a community site like https://groups.drupal.org/nginx ... as I suspect the maintainers here may not be interested in getting into the business of opinions and recommendations and such.

That said, this is my go-to config for Drupal on nginx and has been for several years... I use it from localhost on my laptop on through production deployments. Most everyone has different needs and different setups, so the requisite YMMV generally applies. This is a strong and well-documented config. Much better than most in-the-wild nginx configs you'll no doubt see searching the web.
