Records near the International Date Line

I'm working on an exhibit in Neatline that highlights the links between different places. One of these links is between the Marshall Islands (in Micronesia, just west of the international date line) and Minnesota. I can only draw a line between these two points if I cross all of the US, Europe, and Asia. I would much rather connect these two points by crossing the Pacific Ocean, but Neatline won't let me. I've also had a few problems with records visibility at certain zoom levels around the Marshall Islands and New Zealand (I will "lose sight of" a record around zoom levels 4-6, then it will become visible again at higher zoom levels). Are these problems because of the way Neatline splits up the map? And is there any way around them?

Hey @annamichelle,

I know exactly what you're talking about - I ran into the same problem last year when I tried to make an exhibit about this photograph of a spacewalk over New Zealand, and had to abandon the idea. Frustratingly, this is out of our control in the immediate future - it's actually a bug in OpenLayers 2.x, the mapping library that we use to display the map (see this SO thread for a bit of discussion).

We're actually planning (tentatively) to upgrade the mapping library in the not-too-distant future, and I assume that this isn't a problem in OpenLayers 3.x or Leaflet, the two options we're evaluating. So, once that's done, this should resolve automatically.

@waynegraham, Can you think of any way to hack around this for the time being? I spent some time looking into it last spring, and it seemed like most of the fixes were pretty one-off and not generalizable enough for something like Neatline.

I think anything we do at this point would be a hack, particularly since OL2 hasn't fixed the bug.

Oh bummer. Thanks @davidmcclure and @waynegraham. I guess I'll just work around it the best I can using default zoom levels for records near the date line and look forward to future updates!
