Update AppStream summary and add brand colors
Resolves #1812. Here’s what the brand colours look like in their preview tool (still using the current, outdated screenshot):
For examples of other apps, check out the Flathub home page.
I’m a bit unsure about the dark brand colour. When you make it too light, the contrast against the circle isn’t that good, but when you make it too dark, the contrast against the tip of the pencil suffers. Would appreciate some feedback there. You can try out the preview tool at https://docs.flathub.org/banner-preview/ if you’d like to experiment some yourself. AppStream does not allow specifying separate icons for light and dark mode.
Is anyone able to confirm the changes? otherwise I will go ahead merge this whatever.
The colors and contrast looks alright to me although we could align the brand colors, so they derive from the icon palette.
I've pasted the palette here: https://github.com/pencil2d/pencil/wiki/Icon-design-guideline
light as: #00A9F1
dark: #164B88
I like the idea of keeping the colours consistent, but here I think we should aim for consistency with the logo, not the app icons. The colours in the OP are derived directly from the blues of the logo, based on the same lightness increments as the concentric rings. We could consider updating the logo to match the icons or vice versa, but that’s arguably out-of-scope here.
On an unrelated note – do you mind if I move the icon design guidelines from the wiki to the dev docs in the repo?
The way I see it the background does not have to derive its colors from neither. That's really up to us, since we don't have official "brand" colors.
I mainly wrote the color feedback because you asked for some 😉 Feel free to merge.
The Flathub documentation recommends to consider the brand colours an extension of the icon, and it seems a natural choice to me given how prominently the icon features on the colour. But in all fairness the fault lies with me for not pointing that out to begin with. Thank you for taking the time to not just give feedback on my colours but to suggest some of your own as well. The contrast was my main concern and I’m glad it’s alright :)
Feel free to merge.
Is this an answer to my question about the icon guidelines, a comment about the PR, or both? 😅
