Please let me know if this already exists. I can test and/or build

Your printer MFC-9840CDW is not on the supported list, to test if the drivers work just try selecting any entry marked 'brlaser' and see if it works.

If it does please provide the output of this command: sudo lpinfo --include-schemes usb -l -v

  • Note: printer must be connected via usb for the command to output useful information

This printer does not work. I selected MFC-7420 and printed a test page. It basically just printed short black vertical bars in the upper left hand corner of the page. Should I try a different printer? (It didn't seem like any of the working printers are color laser printers.)

FWIW, here is the info from the lpinfo command when connected via USB.

Device: uri = usb://Brother/MFC-9840CDW?serial=[REDACTED] class = direct info = Brother MFC-9840CDW make-and-model = Brother MFC-9840CDW device-id = MFG:Brother;CMD:PJL,PCL,PCLXL;MDL:MFC-9840CDW;CLS:PRINTER; location =

Sorry, just noticed your using a colour printer, this driver only supports monochrome printers.

Any chance there is one for a color somewhere?

I think this printer works with PostScript driver.

Problem is, it doesnt support scanning...I can print fine, but cannot use the document feed scanner which sucks

You need to install brscan3.  For example, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/brscan3 for arch linux.
