Move unit tests to a modern framework

Goals with updating unit tests:

  • Unit tests run automatically as part of a build
  • Unit tests run automatically when someone submits a PR.
  • Display passing / failing badge in project README.md for unit tests.

Need to determine which framework would be the best to accomplish above goals.
