Location Service error: could not resolve host

I am trying to use the Location Service using paws. I specified the region us-east-1 in my environment variables. When I try to use anything from the service I get the error:

Error in curl::curl_fetch_memory(url, handle = handle) : Could not resolve host:

The following R code generates this error:

location <- paws::locationservice()

location$search_place_index_for_text(
  IndexName = "HereIndex",
  Text = "[Address Redacted]",
  MaxResults = 1
)

Running the above results in:

Error in curl::curl_fetch_memory(url, handle = handle) : Could not resolve host: geo.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
