We recently updated the "Hacking on Qtile" documentation page, it should contain everything needed to get ready working on Qtile: http://docs.qtile.org/en/latest/manual/hacking.html. Requirement, venv, Xephyr, debugging, troubleshoot, etc...

I like what @ramnes is proposing, sometimes you resize based on how the program is rearranging its components (typically: a responsive page in a browser).
