Reduce the number of 3rd party dependencies

Description

By pulling so many external gems in -- we've become victims to a massive dependency chain. It's gotten difficult to ensure compatibility between the different gems.

Tasks

  • Reduce dependency on 3rd party gems, especially in cases where they're lean HTTP wrappers.
