Crashing on notifications
I have gnome shell crashing and disabling my extensions when I use Workspaces to Dock. It doesn't happen everytime but enough that it is unusable.
I have GNOME 3.16.2 on Arch with an Intel graphics board. I have tried disabling every extension except dash to dock. It seems tied to notifications (new email notifications are common)
I have followed you suggestions, how can I help debug this? I basically can't run this extension for more that about 5 to 10 minutes. Happened more infrequently under 3.14.
Interesting. I was just at my my system with Evolution open on one workspace and Firefox on another, I had Dash to Dock on the left. While I was browser a notification appeared (email, but I don't think it matters) and Dash to Dock looked like it restarted. It was quite quick, more like a flicker but it was definitely in time with the notification. It didn't completely crash the shell and dump all my extensions but there is certainly a relationship between odd behaviour and notifications.
More information: I'm not entirely sure yet but it seems related to the Appearance->Height setting. If I don't touch that it runs well so far. If I enable height and then change the values to shrink the dock (I have 4 static workspaces) so there is nothing showing except the workspaces, it intermittently but reliably crashes when a notification comes in.
Thanks for the report. I'll look into it to see what I can find.
Well I spoke to soon, ironically it was the notification of your email that came in and Workspaces to Dock crashed. It certainly seems to last longer with no height adjustment.
I'm using Arch with Gnome 3.16.2, DTD v.46, WTD v.29, but I'm not experiencing any crashes. Can you give me some details about your DTD & WTD extension configurations so that I may duplicate your workstation setup. Also, does it crash on all notifications or just email ones?
Basically the same configuration, I have reset WTD to default settings and DTD I have just set some transparency. I am also on Arch. It only crashes on Email notifications and then only one out of maybe ten or so. What is the best way to get a debug log so I can help with this? You can start gnome shell in the terminal using 'gnome-shell --replace' and watch for errors specific to the extension you are monitoring. You can also check ~./Xsession-errors, which is where the standard output and standard error for Xsession script and all X client processes are directed by default.
