Edge mode for selection and manipulation

"Edge mode" would at its simplest mean the ability to target two points at once. Ie. you could select two points by clicking on the edge between them. This would also tie in with other possible features such as a freeform tweaking tool (click'n'drag to translate), pre-selection highlighting and freeform edge extending tool.

I am not sure, if there would be value in showing the edges as highlighted after selecting.
