keep window layouts when changing between multiple monitors

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. I have three external monitors connected to my system via a docking station. I seldom log out from my laptop, I only use the lock screen, trying to keep state of the browser windows et al as is.

I have two use cases for changing the display layout:

  • removing the laptop from the dock
  • switching the center monitor off in the display settings, but keep the two side monitors on

Now, whenever I change the monitor layout as above, all windows that are there lose their settings and are scattered to other monitors, changing their size. When I switch back to the primary setup, I need to arrange the windows back, moving them to the original monitor.

Describe the solution you'd like I'd really like the window arrangement to be stored per configuration, so that windows automatically are returned to their original position of that layout.

Describe alternatives you've considered A method to store the window layout, i.e. a button that stores a named layout and another one that restores it.

Additional context Fedora 39 user on Gnome Wayland, Lenovo Thinkpad with Dock for that matter.

This is not a bug, but still annoying behavior, since this happens to me frequently.

Note: I really love PaperWM, since it gives me a simplified tiling experience with low fuzz, while keeping the overall Gnome experience. Thanks all for investing your time into this, PaperWM community!
