Does this also happen when you start R directly and not via RCall? IIRC JuliaCall works by creating a latent Julia session and then opening RCall within that nested session....
I know this has been my mantra lately ... but I'm wondering if JuliaCall needs to check to see whether there's an existing RCall session before creating a new one....
I agree it's a bad example. If I recall correctly, the idea was to show the interaction of the amalgamate behavior with categorical predictors
I won't have time to work on this in the immediate future, so @dmbates I would be happy if you could do it. My only recommendation is that we add...
I'm glad we added the note about what the API promise is. 😄 But yes we should make the return value as directly useable as possible. 👍
Ergonomic design is only "obvious" in retrospect. We do a decent job of keeping release notes and haven't had a breaking release in a while, so I'm not terribly opposed...
IIRC the grouseticks example has traditionally been hard to fit -- does it perform better with `init_from_lmm`?
Do we have an intuition about when things would be worse? Maybe in a model with random slopes? In that case, the fit time for the LMM might be nontrivial.
