It feels too complex given the pace of the game, the fact that you could theoretically have multiple promotions simultaneously, and how rarely you'd actually want anything other than a queen. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Player can press ¼ square part with piece instead of pressing the square.

Alternatively, you could have it how play.lczero.org does it, and have some button off to the side for deciding how to promote.

And promoting to a knight might sometimes be a good idea; if you have a horde of pawns promoting, knights would be much harder to keep track of real-time, making the board harder to read for the enemy.

Alternatively, you could have a default pre-pick as queen and then a menu if you want to change. Making both things possible.
