This is following on from open PR's #210 (stale) and #257 (me mostly wanting to see how much work to get it running and see benefits of changes. It's faster!)

As discussed in Slack with @tienvx this issue could be a bit large (I don't have permissions to start a project)

  • [ ] Discuss about a separate branch for 8.x code. Create new branch 8.x, or 7.x and work on master
