We really really need a cool logo
We really really need a cool logo: what about some cat-like logo ... :joy_cat: this sound like purr and everybody loves them, and even if I am more of a dog person I melt when I see them

Based on #9 From @sschuberth and @R2wenD2
Or maybe another name? Purl is a fairly known service for persistent URLs... (purl.org)
@svr would a pkg scheme make you happy?
Yes, it's so generic that no one can claim ownership :)
Any feedback on logos then: does some cat/kitten work ? FWIW I presented purls at FOSDEM https://fosdem.org/2018/schedule/event/purl/ with more kitten pictures ;)
@zvr the pkg prefix is tracked in #9 and #31 ... feedback welcomed there
Here's a first prototype. It's original in that I made it without using anything else as inspiration. Note: I'm not a designer and don't pretend to be. Just have a background in early webdev so i know how to properly use the tools...

Or if you want to stay with the cat theme, here's an alternative.

The cat itself is not original. Borrowed from https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/halloween-cat-face-outline_59636
I have no drawing skills, so I can't participate with anything but ideas, yet what about a cat in a box ? The box being the package part and the cat the puuuuuur part :smile_cat:

Neat. I like the first actually better. Much more speaking as to what it's about.
The first two were more of an abstract view of one side of a box. So yes, a package, but not obvious. Here's a more obvious example. A typical tan/brown box looked like crap, so I kept with the same blue colours.

The one thing I don't like about a more concrete illustration of a physical package/box is that focus is taken away from the thing you want to promote in favour of showing more of the cube structure. So the focal point becomes smaller.
To counteract that, I centered the cat with the front corner, let it wrap two sides, and did not apply any 3D perspective to it.
We use the purl-spec in TONS of stuff over here @sonatype , and the most clever thing I think we thought of so far was in this tool:
https://github.com/sonatype-nexus-community/oysteR
Create purls from the filtered sands of your dependencies, powered by OSS Index
I would roll with the pearl, personally. Also, thanks a ton for all this work!
What about a cat wearing pearls and each pearl is a major ecosystem logo?
^^^^ yesssssssss
An otter with a pearl necklace.

@Micah-H that's pretty neat... may a tad TOO cool :otter:

Here is my submission:

I imagine this one plays Bridge with Nancy on Sundays.
I like https://github.com/package-url/purl-spec/issues/19#issuecomment-424011476 ... but I suggest we collect the few submissions here and have @DarthHater handle this since he volunteered kindly some help with a professional designer. @DarthHater how would you want to handle this?
@pombredanne, I also tried to ping @DarthHater several times from ORT, but he never replied. You should probably reach out to him by mail directly.
@iamwillbar you wanted to also help there based on our chat in https://gitter.im/package-url/Lobby ? Would you be willing to coordinate? :innocent:
@sschuberth @pombredanne @iamwillbar hey buddies, been swamped. The current joke is I put a chainsaw through my knee (true story), but been behind the curve a bit just in general. @ccurtisSonatype is who volunteered at Sonatype, Christine kicks butt. I forwarded this issue to Christine again, I imagine you might see a response tomorrow!
@sschuberth I'm not sure why but I didn't see the ORT stuff in my email (which is usually how I figure out what GitHub stuff to jump in). Public apology for not getting back to you, you are awesome and I really feel bummed!
@DarthHater Hey! thank you for chiming in and please get well. The importance of having functioning limbs is often underestimated.

Ouch, get well!
Public apology for not getting back to you, you are awesome and I really feel bummed!
No worries, it took us long enough to finally get this merged!
gentle ping :)
Here's a hand-written SVG file:
Hi! Maven Central is working on exposing the purl in a copy to clipboard type fashion, and we were like, yo, we need a PURL ICON!
For now, we are using fa-shield-cat from fontawesome but would gladly switch to a real icon if this gets merged/resolved. The team did like the second cat icon @stevespringett posted, and as well @zvr icon (plain and simple and gets the point across!)
@DarthHater we definitely need something.... I kinda like the "perl-in-shell" theme too
