Forced notification grouping on Android 16
I love GDH, thanks so much! Finally I can get Dexcom readings onto my watch easily.
I tried to enable 2 notifications to see both value and trend but it turns out on Android 16 notifications from the same app get force grouped together after a few seconds.
If anyone knows of a workaround to never group that'd be great!
The grouped notification looks like this - totally useless unfortunately.
Hi, yes it is an awful new "feature" of Google. There is a setting for notification to decide to group notifications or not. I use this in GDH to prevent grouping, but it is ignored in Android 16. I already searched for a solution, but only found some reddit entries of other people complaining about it for other apps... As long there is no system setting for it, there is nothing I can do. The only solution is to use multiple apps... For example I´m using Juggluco and GDH, so I already have 2 icons. You can also use GDH second in parallel, but only for an additional icon, not sure, if it makes sense.
Regards, Michael
Thanks Michael! I reached the same conclusion. It'd be nice if the user could opt out of the grouping. It makes sense for Android to not allow multiple notifications by default but to not allow user override is silly. Maybe we can make a case somewhere 😀 Don't know which channels Android devs listen to most.
Btw, you should change the default icon to glucose value not app icon. The icon was just a circle for me which is useless and made me think it was a bug at first.
I've wired you a coffee by the way through PayPal and submitted the app on Hacker news as a thanks: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45286302

Not sure about, what will happen, if older devices does not support it... That is the reason, why I decided to not enable it by default. But as I do not get any feedback, that it won´t work, it may makes sense to enable it by default.

Thank you for the coffee :-) Yes, I got the invitation, but I do not really know, what it is and if it makes sense for such an app!?
Wir können übrigens auch in Deutsch schreiben... ;-)
Re icon: I'd hope Android falls back on something sensible if text doesn't work - the icon wasn't an icon in my case, it was just a boring white circle which might already be a fallback? Alternatively, if you know text is only supported from a certain version, you could make default conditional on version. It's just a shame if some people give up on it because they don't find the right setting.
Re German: I do all work in English and have never done much software dev in German so English is much easier for me 😀 But happy to switch to German if you prefer! It's just less useful for others who might read along as well!
Re HackerNews: I'm not sure what you mean by invitation, did you mean the link here? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45286302 HN is a very popular and influential tech link aggregator in case you haven't come across it yet: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_News For about 0.5% of the readers it'll be useful 😀

Icon: not sure about, I used xDrip+ and there you had to test the notification icon first, before enable it, but as my version start with Android 8, this may be not a problem anymore... You are right, I put it on my todo list.
I got a mail for PitchHut so I thought it was related to the hacker news: https://pitchhut.com/project/glucodatakit
Never heard of PitchHut, quite possible that they Auto-Scan for HN submissions!

Good to know, so I will ignore it. As I got the invitation to join just in the same moment you told me about Hacker News, I thought, it was related to.
I will remove the second and third notification for Android >= 16 within the next version.
