Unknown SSL protocol error

Dear community, I run the code to get started with stream R just as in the description, inserting my consumer key/secret through the ROAuth package. However, when "doing the handshake" I get the following error:

Error in function (type, msg, asError = TRUE) : Unknown SSL protocol error in connection to api.twitter.com:443

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
