Hiding footer or search field takes a long time

Hiding the footer or search field causes the ui to visibly freeze. This is due to the whole menu being rebuild on changes to these settings.

I have some WIP branch locally. Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to finish it yet. Definitely will submit a PR though
