Opening the SSH tunnel

Would it be possible to make an extension that would also open the ssh tunnel? For this extension (or any other of its kind) an ssh tunnel must be first running. Tunnelbear, for example, doesn't require that, but it proxy to the Tunnelbear server(s). Can a similar behavior be replicated with Tunnel-Switch, so the ssh tunnel and opened, and the proxy picked accordingly?
