Critical - Data Loss - v3.4.5 Incompatible with Excel AutoSave

Open miqrogroove opened this issue 9 years ago • 6 comments

Using ownCloud 3.4.5 and Microsoft Excel 1.13.1 for iOS, when I open a document by navigating to More > Locations > ownCloud in the MS Excel app, all work is lost after the first auto save.

Excel appears to be unable to perform multiple auto save operations back to the ownCloud client :(

One workaround to prevent data loss is to select the "Duplicate" option in Excel when finished, which is equivalent to "Save As".

It may be possible to disable the AutoSave option as another workaround, but this creates additional problems. With AutoSave disabled, all work is lost after the first manual save. So, if I write "input 1", click save, then write "input 2" and click save and close the document, then the saved text is "input 1".

Thanks for reporting it. We are checking it, if we weren't able to reproduce it, we may ask you for further details.

@miqrogroove what happens is that we want to have as many control as possible of the files, this is for instace to control conflicts on files, for instance,

1.- User1 offile modifies a shared document on the iOS app 2.- User2 modifies the same document from the web 3.- User1 is online, the app the app uploads the file and detect the conflict. User1 is asked what to do: overwritte, rename or cancel

Becuase of that the app is designed like follows:

1.- You open a document by navigating to More > Locations > ownCloud in the MS Excel app, (the autosave option is enable) 2.- Modify it 3.-Then, once you open the ownCloud app, changes are detected and uploaded to your cloud

For future versions of the app, we will check whether it´s possible to upload changes without having to open the ownCloud app without losing the control over the uploads

I undetstand the flow but it must be possible to save multiple times prior to opening the ownCloud app. This is before the upload process so there would be no conflicts, merely multiple saves while working.

@miqrogroove we have a problem here. We can not recover the progress or the status of an upload that was sent from other app using the Document Provider. This is because we do not upload the files immediately after be saved without open ownCloud. We do not want to lose the control of the upload because it could be dangerous (conflicts, the possibility to cancel...)

This is a major problem for us too. We can't save multiple time a file. We need to go in Owncloud each time. We loose a lot of work progress. I think the flow need to be reviewed because isn't usable in real life. Using an iPad Pro as main device with owncloud as file backend is very time consuming.

@nasli

1.- You open a document by navigating to More > Locations > ownCloud in the MS Excel app, (the autosave option is enable) 2.- Modify it 3.-Then, once you open the ownCloud app, changes are detected and uploaded to your cloud

The described process should be changed to: 1.- You open a document by navigating to More > Locations > ownCloud in the MS Excel app, (the autosave option is enable) 2.- Modify it 3.- Document automatically gets uploaded to OwnCloud

The user already opened a document from a cloud storage. Therefore, the changes the user makes should also be automatically synced to OwnCloud (Same behaviour as Dropbox, Box,...). Because the file already was in the cloud the user also expects changes to be automatically in the cloud.
