Samba File Server Configuration (SMB/CIFS) outdated

Open cortho opened this issue 3 years ago • 4 comments

WHAT Needs to be Documented?

in ownCloud 10.7 the files_external app does not provide the option "SMB/CIFS" as stated in the documentation, there are two other options SMB collab.” and “SMB personal.” instead, which are not documented at all.

WHERE Does This Need To Be Documented (Link)?

https://doc.owncloud.com/server/admin_manual/configuration/files/external_storage/smb.html

WHY Should This Change Be Made?

Feature change is not reflected in the docs

Furthermore the article in question here (https://doc.owncloud.com/server/10.8/admin_manual/configuration/files/external_storage/smb.html says):

"To connect ownCloud to an SMB file server, you need to prepare your server. Please see the Manual Installation on Linux guides for more information, prerequisites and requirements."

The Manual installation guides do not mention SMB at all.

To be fair to @mmattel, he wrote a detailed guide, with many linked guide inside his guide

https://doc.owncloud.com/server/10.8/admin_manual/installation/manual_installation/manual_installation.html

If you then go to the preparation manual:

https://doc.owncloud.com/server/10.8/admin_manual/installation/manual_installation/server_prep_ubuntu_20.04.html

It mentions the smb client.

as well as in the other, general guide:

https://doc.owncloud.com/server/10.8/admin_manual/installation/manual_installation/manual_installation_prerequisites.html

The guides that were written mostly by the support team don't mention smb stuff because the goal was to set up quick installation guides to get the oC up and running. Storage varies from customer to customer, so most of the time the customer then would connect to his storage solution his way.

This are the guides I am talking about:

https://doc.owncloud.com/server/10.8/admin_manual/installation/quick_guides/ubuntu_20_04.html

Edit

Okay, new day, new perspective:

The installation manuals don't mention the smb options at all, the collective and the personal. This is important!

Here is a comment from JP, when you decide to write that section in the docs, maybe this will be of help to you.

couple of things:
* I'm not sure collaborative will be faster. We need to check permissions on each access; it they aren't cached (or cache has expired) this will be slower than checking permissions directly in the DB
* WND has a slightly different implementation regarding the permission check. WND will open and close the remote file in order to verify the user has permissions to read the file (or folder). SMB will just do a stat. This means that WND is likely to be slower, however, a stat call isn't enough to verify that the user can or can't access the file, so SMB might have bugs in that regard

I talked to Holger and he showed me this documentation: https://doc.owncloud.com/server/next/admin_manual/enterprise/external_storage/windows-network-drive_configuration.html#collaborative-wnd

It seems exactly to be what I was looking for, but it has a naming issue - no one would suspect that this is about "collaborative SMB" - as it is named "Windows Network Drive Configuration". Maybe just rename this page or link to this page from other pages that mention SMB.
