Better handling of ‘World’ in chart titles, annotations, and scatter plots.
Core problem
There are shortcomings with the way we refer to "World" currently in our charts.
- As a label on scatter plots or line charts, it would be better to say ‘Global average’ rather than ‘World’
- In scatter plots sized by population that include both individual countries plus the world, we should consider special casing "World" so it doesn't overwhelm the other points in the chart (see e.g. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/prevalence-of-drug-use-disorders-males-vs-females)
- We should consider improving the phrasing / grammar of "World" in chart titles (see e.g. 1, 2, 3 for cases where it may be better to say "Globally" vs 4 where "World" might be better).
Proposed solution
- Labels on scatter plots or line charts say ‘Global average’ rather than ‘World’
- Scatter plots with size encoding population have a special case for the world
- Chart titles including "World" or similar are clear and grammatical
Would be improved with https://github.com/owid/owid-grapher/issues/1692
Marking this as "nice to have" because, although the wording could be improved, it's not a correctness issue. Since this is actually multiple issues, it would need breaking up before it could be worked on.
Chiara Bercu also brought this up in her review of our work and in her recommendations in her style guide: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YTSfCTu1yUHpHcgPDgjgAzdRDal6pHUx9LXj3h6Msks/edit
She says:
