This won't be fixed on -old version only on the 1.0 one. Please report an issue on 1.0 so we track it there. All the info you posted is valuable...

I didn't understand the use case you're trying to cover. If you want to check if the file is an archive or not it might be done using the file...
Generally speaking, if not supported, it will report an error. Isn't this enough?
