Design of the badge program

Open Cheukting opened this issue 2 years ago • 12 comments

Open to discussion of the design of the badge program. Points to think about:

  • what activities will be awarded
  • how to keep track/ qualify of such activities

I think public activities that covers OSSF topics should count, including:

  • talks
  • blog posts
  • videos
  • podcasts

We need to have designs for those as well @jennbly do we have a designer to do that?

I also wonder if there is someone in the community that might be good at graphic design and want to do this? Many times people think you need to code to contribute. Here is a good example of artists wanted :)

Do we have an idea, or a reference for the badge or badges we need? So we can give details to the designers

An example of badges we've done related to events through Credly - for the Program Committee and Speakers at 2023 OpenSSF Day NA and EU are here: https://www.credly.com/org/the-linux-foundation/badge/speaker-openssf-day-europe-speaker-2023

If we want to utilize the LF design team, we'd need to fill out a creative brief first: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LNwieHXwlMUnA-lP2EPMSnLFLmW5sMZ1QDKrWMvJoKk/edit which could be a useful exercise regardless to help determine our requirements.

I think these are good activities, how many of them do we need for the award? (e.g. 3 talks = bronze level, 5 talks = silver level, 7 talks = gold level etc?)

speaker badge

First design draft of the badge, would like to hear some comments

@Cheukting I like the general idea of this design, but I think it can be improved on a couple of layers: the three main font items should be better aligned, probably also working on the font itself, and I think it needs an accessibility check, to validate colors and font sizing (for example "open source security foundation" becomes unreadable if the badge is printed small)

Also I have a question: can we play with the color of the shield? I was wondering if it could reflect the badge level.

@edodusi good comment about the fonts, I will incorporate them in the next iteration. For the color of the shield, I am afraid that is from our logo so cannot be change easily (at least for me)

speaker badge (1)

2nd iteration, is this better?

Cheukting avatar Oct 29 '23 23:10 Cheukting

I think this is better, maybe too much space between the lines in GREAT SPEAKER, but generally seems like a good improvement in design and accessibility.

One thing: the yellow background seems ok for the "silver level", but what about gold and bronze?

Adding this google doc here done by @SecurityCRob that has some great ideas for badges
