[RfC] Display OSM-FR tiles in OSM wiki

Open Tigerfell opened this issue 5 years ago • 7 comments

In openstreetmap/chef#241, a new map extension was added to the wiki at wiki.osm.org. It allows displaying tiles from arbitrary tile servers. When replacing an old map extension on wiki pages, I found multiple links to tile.openstreetmap.fr. I suggest to add https://{s}.tile.openstreetmap.fr/osmfr/{z}/{x}/{y}.png to the list of available tile layers, so users can display OSM-FR tiles on wiki pages using template slippymap with layer=french. Does the community approve the idea? Do you have any questions or concerns?

(I also asked this at cquest/osmfr-cartocss/issues/61, but did not receive a reply yet.)

It does not have a cache (apart from the browser cache). It embeds a Leaflet frame onto a wiki page. The extension is documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MultiMaps.

It is perfectly fine to add osmfr style to OSM wiki - thanks for the suggestion!

I would like to keep this open and I will start a new attempt now. It seems to be necessary to make a very formal request at the wiki community and later at OWG.

I filed the official proposal to OpenStreetMap's Operation Working Group today.

Hi @Tigerfell Is the osmfr layer integrated by OWG ? Is this issue could be closed ?
