A "check for updates" button is a fine thing to do as well.
Do you see a particular need for a proxy server option? I don't see that it's obviously necessary.
How about top-center of the settings window -- in the title bar?
Yes, a toggle is a fine idea... but since that's a setting, it should go further down in the settings menu. The mechanism of the update depends a good deal...
Lots to think about here-- I need to try some hands-on tests. Spiral paint is AMAZING.
I've been looking at paper.js here. It _appears_ to be much the same as Processing in capabilities and style... And a long, long way from having the "easy to use"...
This is probably even more work than it sounds like...

Have you tried the newer versions? I would recommend trying with v2.0.0 Beta 2.
