Config resets to default if there's an error in it, rather than offering options

I'm currently using the snap of ElectronPlayer available in the Ubuntu store, but am raising an issue here in case it's common to versions.

First of all, thanks for the great app - I've edited the config to have all my UK streaming providers (BBC iPlayer, UKTV Play, etc.). One annoyance: whenever I made and saved a small error in the config (like a missing comma) I found that the whole config file reset itself on startup. Numerous times I lost my progress and had to start again because of a mistake.

Instead of this behaviour, would it be possible to show an error message on startup ("Your config file is invalid") and give the user an option to either reset the config to default or edit it to fix the problem before seeing the menu?

Better yet: given how simple the config is... how about a graphical wizard that edits it for you?

I have been wanting to make a GUI for the config just haven't found the free time. The config is managed by an external package which for some reason have decided to reset itself on syntax errors. I don't have control over that behaviour unless I were to create a custom config system. I may build my own in the future, its just a matter of when I get free time to maintain the project.
