In case someone is interested investigating research, application-tailored lossless FP compression, the TACC presentation of Martin Burtscher (TACC) FPcrush was impressive. Here is the SC16 paper describing their genetic algorithm to find an optimal compressor.

Unfortunately, they currently only provide binaries, but in case someone seeks for a TACC collaboration or wants to reproduce their work... :)
