snap.tar.gz file not valid

The snap.tar.gz file (48 bytes) mentioned in the bootstrap instructions is not extractable on either Plan 9 (fails with “bad gzip file magic”) or macOS where various unzippers complain of invalid archives.

It's not a problem on 9front, probably user error
