Display city/town symbol (maybe small circle or sqare) at low zooms
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. At certain zoom the map does not provide info about cities. Only capitals are shown with a black star (screenshot below)
Describe the ideal solution It would be useful that the map display cities (and maybe also towns when close enough), maybe as small black squares or circles. Now OM only shows some cities by their name, but there are several others cities or towns, that obviously their name cannot be displayed at the same time, but a small symbol can make them visible.
Describe alternatives you have considered OSMand uses a small black circle as city symbol, and a yet smaller black circle as town symbol.

Here there are some screenshots of the actual OM map, and a overpass turbo query showing where the city symbols could be expected.
It depends a lot on the region. E.g. in China cities/towns are so dense that we can't fit all their names. If we add symbols into the mix then I'm afraid it might get even messier..
As I get it, this issue is about those cases where city or town names are not displayed or displaced by other cities or towns. So instead of only omitting the caption and showing nothing, a symbol could indicate that something is there.
So in China there will be a lot of symbols instead of names (in case symbols have priority over names)? Or same amount of names but with extra symbols inbetween (if names have priority)? Or render names over symbols? Its gonna be very messy IMHO.

Yes, it seems that depends a lot on the region. I have just experience in the countries/areas that I use more frequently.
This label density makes reading the map in this screenshot difficult for me. At that zoom I would prefer a map that shows only province names and capitals cities names and symbols, or maybe also some of the largest or most important cities names if there is room for them. The other cities it would be displayes only as symbol. And then, shows more cities labels when I zoom in. At that zoom maybe is also important to show some rivers, or some important highways. The road network connecting all this chinese cities is something that seems missing in that picture.
Is this "city/town density metric" a parameter that is easy to calculate in the bbox that is going to be displayed? Could be some important rivers added to the mix?

In the case of human settlements the symbol is useful because it can be displayed in the precise location of the element. The name is much bigger, and, e.g., in the image of the China map is not clear where the feature the name is refering to is located (in the center of the name? before the name? after it? ...)
