On first map download, explain why map downloads are needed
Overview For the average person in the United States and Europe, where cell phone signals are really good and online maps are the primary navigation apps, offline maps are not well known, and to many people downloading maps within an app is a new concept.
Problem Statement
- When opening the app for the first time, there is no explanation for why something else needs to be downloaded, after they already downloaded the app; this is a confusing experience. Not having clear information about why downloads are required, detracts average people from using the app and results in a number of uninstalls.
- Apps don't typically ask for additional downloads unless they are expansions or add-on purchases. Asking to download without clarifying, may give the impression that additional modules are necessary just to run the app.
Criteria
- When zero maps have been downloaded, when no local maps are available (no matter if this is the first launch of the app or not), display a more detailed message (below), in place of the current message. After at least one map is downloaded, display the standard message.
- Message: In addition to the information currently displayed for map downloads, at the top of the message add the following text: "Offline Maps Organic Maps uses maps downloaded to your phone, for navigation and fast search without a cellular signal. Download to get started."
