I would suggest you see if the lack of compositor is what is causing the flickering. Additionally, try reproducing the problem in other standalone window managers like openbox or awesomewm.

Interestingly `XSession` is not part of the spec but it seems quite commonplace in other `.desktop` files. Do you have a source for it? We should at least mention this...
