Estimation of road fraction

Open wurtzj opened this issue 2 years ago • 4 comments

Hello everybody,

Looking to Geoclimate outputs from OSM (not v0.0.2 as I cannot run new version though) I found that road fraction were underestimated by a factor 2 or 3. In particular, it seems that sidewalks are not used. Adding sidewalks would improve road fraction estimation significantly.

Thank you ! Best regards,

sidewalks is not used by geoclimate because this feature is not well documented on osm and other database. See the percentage here https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/sidewalk

This could be an improvement for GeoClimate. It will require new algorithms to merge this data with, for example, roads

Thank you for your answer !

So this is why argument "sidewalk" is set by default to "no" rather than "two" ?

Good catch, by default we might set sidewalk to 2 instead of no. However, sidewalk are actually not taken into account in the road_fraction neither in impervious fraction calculations... We should add an indicator of sidewalk_fraction. But in that case we would also need the sidewalk width information and set a default value.

Hello everybody, This subject is very interesting... and will be necesssary to distingish roads and sidewalks for impervious fractions. But we must admit OSM lacks this information. But Google has gone further recently on Paris... See for example: https://bgr.com/tech/google-maps-features-street-level-details/ Maybe using Opendata (https://opendata.paris.fr/explore/dataset/plan-de-voirie-trottoirs-emprises/map/?disjunctive.num_pave&basemap=jawg.dark&location=12,48.85886,2.34792) ?
