Crashing In Control When Switching to FSR3x Windows 11 - Latest Nightly

Open UnbendingNose opened this issue 9 months ago • 9 comments

Control Ultimate Edition (Steam) OptiScaler_v0.7.7-pre7_20250321 9070 XT Windows 11 Manual Install Yes, checked the wiki. Game is crashing when switching to FSR3. Also, there's no FSR4 option in the drop down. Setting Fsr4Update = false works and allows me to use and select FSR3 without crashing. I would like to use FSR4 though.

FSR4 Upgrade is broken on Control with the latest game update, known issue atm.

Thanks for the update! Is there a version I can roll back to that works for now while I wait for a fix? Anywhere I can track for said fix?

UnbendingNose avatar Mar 21 '25 18:03 UnbendingNose

Not really tbh, problem with Control is it required the unofficial HDR mod for Optiscaler to work properly, and FSR4 already didn't work on that mod. So now when they merged the mod in the latest update, it's still not working. And it's questionable when this will be looked at as none of us have an RDNA4 GPU.

Bummer, it's the main game I want to test out. Thanks for the honesty.

If you own the game on steam, it's not difficult to downgrade it to the previous version which didn't crash with FSR4 as a workaround. You can find instructions online, but tl;dr you just need to open steam console and enter this: download_depot 870780 870782 8361276401184920724 (courtesy of steamdb). edit: That's probably only specifically for ultimate edition, the base edition might be different.

I'm a little annoyed because if I try to use Optiscaler in the previous version of Control, I just get awful pixelation of the overall image, especially if I try to use FSR4.

You can see it in the text on the emergency light, the board room sign, etc.

I don't really understand what the issue is, especially as I tried Optiscaler before and I commented on a gaming thread saying the result was incredible, but now I don't know if I just didn't look all that closely or if this is a new issue.

Try using the non-linear sRGB or PQ input, maybe it'll help. But yeah, Optiscaler always had issues with Control before the unofficial HDR mod dropped

No luck unfortunately. I think it might just be an issue with Control's weird implementation of DLSS in general. I remember that previously it wasn't possible to update the DLSS .dll because it would break the game so clearly they've done something non-standard. I wonder if that's just the issue here.

Viexi avatar Mar 23 '25 10:03 Viexi

Yeah, their whack DLSS implementation is exactly why Optiscaler only started working properly with FSR with the unofficial HDR mod. But now, ironically, FSR4 isn't working due to it.

With the latest Nightly build, Control now works fine, along with the rest of the previously crashing games.

TheRazerMD avatar Jun 28 '25 15:06 TheRazerMD

I tried the latest nightly (pre12_20250630) and set it up how it says under the compatibility guide but it's still crashing for me. Re-installed the game too, still crashing when switching to FSR3. Drivers are up to date, on 9070 XT (25.6.1).

UnbendingNose avatar Jul 02 '25 01:07 UnbendingNose

We're not able to reproduce that issue, seems to work fine for people testing the 0630 build from what we've seen.

Game needs to be updated to the latest version, since the last update merged the HDR mod.

Be sure you deleted the old Optiscaler build (removing the renamed Opti dll, uninstaller BAT file should take care of it), install the new one properly as dxgi.dll (enough to download the Nightly, it's already fully bundled), and try again. If it's crashing, try adding the amdxcffx64.dll as Opti might not be able to locate it properly from Windows folder. Might also try Dxgi=false since IIRC Control shows DLSS inputs without spoofing.

If that's also not working, then send a log file.

TheRazerMD avatar Jul 02 '25 16:07 TheRazerMD

I just tried dxgi=false and I made sure mdxcffx64.dll is in the game directory. Still crashes.

Yeah, that's how I set it up. I completely re-installed the game. Then did the following:

  • Copied in the old OptiScaler.dll from OptiScaler_v0.7.7-pre9_Daria
  • Copied in all the files from extracted OptiScaler_v0.7.7-pre12_20250630.7z
  • Ran the install batch file using 1-1-1
  • Fired up and game turned on DLSS
  • Switched to FSR3 and freeze and crash occurs

Maybe I should try an older OptiScaler.dll if you can share it? :) Attached my log: OptiScaler.zip

Hi,

Your log starts like this:

10:24:34.934260] [W] OptiScaler v0.7.7-pre7 (20250321_041723) loaded

v0.7.7-pre7 Are you sure you are using latest nightly?

cdozdil avatar Jul 03 '25 05:07 cdozdil

@UnbendingNose You're using a completely wrong version of Optiscaler. Use the one I linked above in the latest Nightly build ( OptiScaler_v0.7.7-pre12_20250630.7z), no wonder it's still crashing for you when you're running a 3.5 months old build.

Delete old version of Opti, run the uninstaller bat, delete dxgi.dll if it's still remaining, extract and install Optiscaler Nightly just as normally as linked in Wiki-Installation, no dll swapping or whatever you were doing. Control should work without spoofing even, so 1-1-2 would be enough to get DLSS inputs.
