Unwanted display of distance in imperial units

How to reproduce the issue?
- Log in on https://www.openstreetmap.org
- Press the "Edit" button
- Observe the lower left corner of the iD editor.

In my editor, I see this:

I assume ft
is referencing to the distance unit "feet".
I'm really not interested in being subjected to anything but metric units in my editor, so I'm pretty annoyed by this. I even recall that until quite recently, this display was in the metric system.
I'd love an explanation for this sudden change to an archaic system of measurement, as well as instructions for how I can swap back to metric for good.
