Add VM support for OSM

Open michelleN opened this issue 4 years ago • 3 comments

Please describe the Improvement and/or Feature Request Add VM support for OSM

We did build out a POC for for extending OSM to support VMs via a provider specific (Azure specific) CRD. This was experimental and is not currently supported. We need to go back and design the end to end user experience, how to onboard a VM with the osm cli and the least number of manual steps, and how a provider (a cloud like Azure, GCP, AWS, IBM, etc) would implement support for VMs running on their platform (currently would have to contribute to osm codebase).

Open Questions:

  • How will SMI support VM based applications? Currently TrafficTarget only support ServiceAccount based identity for applications. What would the equivalent be for VM based apps?

Scope

  • New Functionality [x]
  • Traffic Access Control [ ]
  • Traffic Specs [ ]
  • Traffic Metrics [ ]
  • Traffic Split [ ]

Possible use cases As a user who has legacy applications running on VMs, I'd like to be able to add those applications to my service mesh so that can also be managed by OSM and take advantage of traffic splitting, access control, and metrics features.

This has been lingering for a while. We should probably put a plan together to enable this feature.
